Discover more about Wat Xiengthong

Wat Xiengthong, located at the tip of the Luang Prabang peninsula, is more than just a temple; it's a journey through Lao history and art. Constructed between 1559 and 1560 by King Setthathirath, its name translates to 'Temple of the Golden City,' and it has remained a significant monument to the spirit of religion, royalty, and traditional Lao art. The temple's architecture is a prime example of the Luang Prabang style, featuring a low, sweeping double-tiered roof and rich interior and exterior decorations. The sim, or main shrine hall, boasts nine cascading roofs adorned with gold stenciling, while the Dok So Fa, small gold-covered pagodas, reach towards the sky. Inside, walls are decorated with gold stencils depicting mythological scenes and geometric designs, with Dharmachakras on the ceiling. The rear gable showcases a stunning glass mosaic of the tree of life. Other notable structures within the temple grounds include the Triptaka library (built in 1880), the drum tower (1961), and the mission hall (dating back to 1560). The royal funerary carriage house displays a 12-meter-high carriage and various urns for royal family members. A significant feature is the Chapel of the Reclining Buddha, featuring a large Buddhist statue. Wat Xiengthong served as a royal temple, hosting coronations and important religious events until 1975. It also functioned as a place of worship, a shrine for Buddhist relics, a library for ancient scripts, and a showcase of traditional architecture. The temple is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its beauty and history.
