Discover more about Viengxay caves

The Viengxay Caves, also known as the “Hidden City”, represent a network of almost 500 caves that served as a strategic base for the Pathet Lao during the Second Indochina War. Located in the remote Houaphanh Province of northeastern Laos, near the Vietnamese border, these caves provided refuge for over 20,000 people, including leaders and civilians, from American bombings. From 1964 to 1973, the caves were transformed into a fully functional underground city, complete with homes, hospitals, schools, military headquarters, government offices, a bakery, a bank, a car repair workshop, and even a theater. The caves served as the nerve center for the communist insurgency against the US-backed Royal Lao Government. The area's proximity to the North Vietnamese border made it ideal for logistical and political support. Farmers even had to farm at night to avoid bombing raids. Today, visitors can explore a select few of these caves and gain insight into this hidden wartime world. Guided tours, complete with audio guides in multiple languages, lead you through the former residences of leaders like President Kaysone Phomvihane and Prince Souphanouvong, as well as significant sites like the Xanglot Cave, which once served as a central meeting and entertainment area. The tours also include the Artillery Cave, a military installation that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Visiting the Viengxay Caves is like stepping back in time, offering a unique and profound understanding of Laos's history and the resilience of its people.
