Discover more about Patuxay - Victory Monument

Patuxay, meaning "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph", is a war monument in the heart of Vientiane, Laos. Built between 1957 and 1968, it stands as a tribute to those who fought for independence from France. While reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Patuxay incorporates traditional Laotian design elements, creating a unique architectural symbol. The monument's exterior features Buddhist religious symbols like lotus leaves and stupa-shaped towers, along with statues of animist kinnari (half-female, half-bird figures) and nagas (dragons). The five towers crowning the arch represent the five Buddhist principles: thoughtful amiability, flexibility, honesty, honor, and prosperity. Inside, the walls and ceilings are adorned with paintings depicting gods, goddesses, and elephants. Visitors can ascend the monument to enjoy panoramic views of Vientiane. The surrounding Patuxay Park offers a pleasant space for strolling, with palm trees, lotus ponds, and a musical fountain donated by China. The park also features a World Peace Gong presented by Indonesia. Patuxay stands as a reminder of Laos's history, resilience, and cultural heritage.
