Drubazu Botanic Trail: A Walk Through Abava Valley's Biodiversity

The Drubazu Botanic Trail invites visitors to explore the natural beauty of the Abava River valley. Located near Sabile, this trail is a haven for those seeking a peaceful connection with nature. The trail consists of two loops, a shorter 1.2 km route and a longer 2 km option, both winding through diverse grassland ecosystems.As you walk the trail, you'll encounter one of Latvia's most dense and beautiful juniper glades. The varying humidity and soil conditions along the slope have fostered the creation of several distinct grassland types. On the drier, calcareous upper slopes, you might spot the mountain clover, while the rich fen areas host a number of protected and rare plant species.The trail is located on the farm “Drubazas”, which specializes in environment protection projects and providing tourism services. The farm is near Sabile, close to the Riga-Kuldiga road and within the Abava River Valley Nature Park. Sabile itself is a charming town known for its Wine Hill, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the northernmost vineyard in the world. The town also boasts a rich history, with the Livonian Order building a castle there in the 13th century.While the trail isn't heavily marked, it's generally easy to follow. It offers a moderate hiking experience with a mix of paths, forest roads and wooden boardwalks.
