Discover more about Vērmane Garden

Vērmane Garden, or Vērmanes dārzs, is a cherished green space located in the very center of Riga, surrounded by Tērbatas, Elizabetes, Krišjāņa Barona, and Merķeļa streets. As the city's oldest public garden, it holds a special place in the hearts of Rigans and visitors. Originally established as Wöhrmann Park in 1814, the garden was created thanks to donations from Anna Gertrud Vērmane (née Ebel), a wealthy widow who allocated land and funds for its creation. The park was inaugurated in 1817 with exotic trees, a rose garden, and a restaurant. In 1829, a granite obelisk was erected in memory of Anna Wöhrmann, though it was later dismantled before World War II and recreated in 2000. Over the years, Vērmane Garden has evolved, expanding in size and features. In 1881, director Georg Kuphaldt added flower parterres and various exotic trees and bushes. Today, the park features sculptures, including a four-season fountain, stone lions, a monument to Krišjānis Barons (a collector of Latvian folk songs), and a bronze statue of artist Kārlis Padegs. An open-air stage hosts concerts and performances, while a playground provides entertainment for children. During the winter, the park transforms into a magical wonderland with lights and decorations. Visitors can relax on the numerous benches, play chess, enjoy a picnic, or attend one of the many events held in the park. A tea house and other establishments are located in the historic building on the corner of Tērbatas and Merķeļa streets.
