Bauska Castle: A Confluence of History

Bauska Castle, situated on a picturesque spit of land where the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers converge to form the Lielupe, is a captivating historical site. The castle is divided into two parts: the ruins of the Livonian Order Castle, built in the mid-15th century, and the more recent residence of the Duke of Courland, constructed in the late 16th century.The Livonian Order Castle, the oldest part, was built specifically for artillery cannons. Today, only ruins remain, but visitors can still appreciate the strategic layout of the defensive walls and towers. The central tower has been restored and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.The newer section, the ducal residence, showcases architectural styles of Mannerism. Restoration efforts began in the 1970s to transform it into a tourism destination, highlighting the historical and architectural heritage of the region. Inside, visitors can explore renovated living rooms, representation halls, and a kitchen, adorned with period furnishings, fireplaces, and tile stoves. Exhibitions within the castle delve into its history, showcasing artifacts such as clothing, jewelry, and weaponry from the Duchy of Courland.Throughout the year, Bauska Castle hosts various events, including early music festivals and fencing tournaments. The museum organizes thematic programs and guided tours, providing deeper insights into the castle's past.
