Discover more about Ķūķu cliffs

Ķūķu Cliffs, situated in the Raiskums Parish of Cēsis Municipality, are a breathtaking natural wonder within Gauja National Park. These cliffs represent the most massive sandstone outcrop in Latvia from the Devonian Period, stretching approximately 500 meters in length and soaring to a height of 43 meters. The cliffs offer panoramic views of the surrounding lush forests and the Gauja River below. The cliffs are a dynamic geological monument, constantly reshaped by the forces of nature. The Gauja River's current, along with springs and ice during floodwaters, continues to mold the sandstone formations. Two brooks have carved out caves within the cliffs, some reaching lengths of 10 to 20 meters, accessible primarily by canoe. In colder winters, the cliffs transform into a spectacle of frozen waterfalls, adding to their allure. Historically, the cliffs were known to ancient rafters as “Straujās” (The Fast) Cliff, owing to the multi-stage threshold near the cliffs. The name reflects the area's challenging river conditions. The upper part of the cliffs features clay layers containing fossil remains of long-dead organisms, offering a glimpse into the region's ancient past. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including hiking along scenic trails that meander through the area. The site is perfect for picnics, photography, and birdwatching, providing a tranquil escape.
