Discover more about Cat House

Located on Meistaru iela, the Cat House (Kaķu nams) is one of the most photographed buildings in Riga's historic center. Constructed in 1909 by architect Friedrich Scheffel, the building showcases a unique blend of medieval architectural elements with Art Nouveau flourishes. Its most distinctive feature is, of course, the two copper cat sculptures sitting on its roof, with arched backs and raised tails. The origin of these feline figures is rooted in local legend. As the story goes, a wealthy Latvian tradesman was denied membership to the Great Guild. In retaliation, he commissioned the cat sculptures and had them placed on his building so their tails pointed directly at the Great Guild, which was nearby. This was meant as a clear sign of disrespect and mockery. Eventually, the Great Guild took the tradesman to court, demanding the cats be turned to face the guildhouse. Another version claims the dispute was with the Riga City Council. Today, the cats have been turned and are a source of amusement for tourists and locals alike. The Cat House remains a significant architectural feature in Riga, embodying the city's medieval past and the playful spirit of its legends.
