Nestled in the Zemgale Plains of southern Latvia, Rundāle Palace is an architectural and artistic treasure. Constructed in two phases (1736-1740 and 1764-1768) by Francesco Rastrelli, the palace served as the summer residence of Ernst Johann von Biron, Duke of Courland. Rastrelli, who also designed St. Petersburg's Winter Palace, envisioned Rundāle as a residence that would rival other royal dwellings. The palace boasts a blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, evident in its intricate floral motifs and elegant, asymmetrical designs. The interiors, largely completed between 1765 and 1768, feature the work of sculptor Johann Michael Graff and painters Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi. Visitors can explore the grand halls, including the Golden Hall, White Hall, and Great Gallery, as well as the Duke's and Duchess's suites. The museum's exhibitions showcase European and Latvian decorative art from the 15th to 20th centuries, along with collections of church art and sarcophagi. The French garden, designed alongside the palace, extends over 10 hectares and features ornamental parterres, a Green Theater, bosquets, pergolas, and a labyrinth. The garden has been carefully restored to its original layout and also includes a rose garden with over 2,200 varieties.
