Discover more about Turaida Castle

Turaida Castle, meaning 'Thor's Garden' in Livonian, is a recently reconstructed medieval castle located in Turaida, Latvia, in the Vidzeme region, across the Gauja River from Sigulda. The castle, with its red-brick construction, stands as a testament to the medieval history of the region.Construction of the castle began in 1214, commissioned by Albert, the Archbishop of Riga, for the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, on the site of a former wooden castle of the Livonians. The castle was initially named Fredeland, meaning 'Land of Peace,' but it became known by its Livonian name, Turaida. Over the centuries, the castle served as a military stronghold and a residence for local nobles. It witnessed numerous battles and changed hands several times. In 1776, a fire led to its abandonment, and it gradually fell into ruin.Extensive restoration efforts in the 20th century have breathed new life into the castle. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved site, including the main tower, defensive walls, and a museum within the 15th-century granary. The museum offers insights into the history of the region, the Livonian Confederation, and archaeological findings. The Turaida Museum Reserve, encompassing the castle and surrounding area, covers 43 hectares and includes historical buildings with exhibitions and a sculpture garden. From the castle's 27-meter-high viewing platform, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Gauja valley.
