Originally named Fredeland, meaning 'Land of Peace,' it soon became known by its Livonian name, Turaida, meaning Thor's Garden.Throughout the Middle Ages, Turaida Castle served as an important economic center, a local administrator's residence, and a military stronghold for the Archbishops of Riga. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous expansions and modifications to improve its defenses. However, a devastating fire in 1776 led to its abandonment, and it gradually fell into ruin.In the 20th century, extensive archaeological excavations and restoration efforts were undertaken to revive the castle. Today, Turaida Castle is part of the Turaida Museum Reserve, a protected historical and cultural monument spanning over 40 hectares. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved structures, including the main tower offering panoramic views of the Gauja River valley. The Dainu Hill, a sculpture garden featuring 26 granite sculptures, celebrates Latvian folklore and traditions.
