Discover more about Agenskalns Market

Āgenskalns Market, the oldest marketplace on Riga's left bank of the Daugava River, has been a community focal point since 1898. What began as a simple gathering of traders evolved into a structured market in 1863. The current building, a prime example of early 20th-century rational Art Nouveau architecture, was designed by Reinhold Schmaeling. Construction started in 1911 but was halted by World War I, finally completed in 1923 with Alfrēds Grīnbergs redesigning the front entrance. The market features a red brick facade, metal structures, and wide galleries. Inside, find a diverse array of goods, from fresh produce and local delicacies to handmade crafts. The ground floor hosts local farmers and producers selling fresh dairy, bread, coffee, fish and meat products. The second floor offers bars and restaurants with local favorites. After extensive renovations from 2018 to 2022, the market has retained its historical character while integrating modern functionality. Today, Āgenskalns Market is an inclusive space that hosts cultural, educational, and community events. It is also home to a flea market every weekend and a vintage market on the last Sunday of the month.
