Discover more about Dome Square

Dome Square, or Doma laukums, is more than just a central plaza; it's the historical and social nucleus of Riga. As the largest square in Old Town, it acts as a convergence point, with seven streets flowing into it like arteries. The square is framed by buildings dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing a blend of architectural styles. The square's development began in the late 19th century when buildings were razed to provide a clearer view of the Riga Dome Cathedral's entrance. The square officially acquired its name in 1885 and reached its current form in 1936. Key architectural landmarks bordering the square include the Riga Dome Cathedral and the Riga Bourse House, an early example of Eclecticism. Throughout the years, Dome Square has been the site of many significant events in Latvia's history. In 1991, during Latvia's declaration of independence from the USSR, locals built barricades in Dome Square to protect the city from potential Soviet reprisals. Today, the square is a peaceful gathering place, hosting summer beer gardens and a Christmas market in winter. A marked point in the square allows visitors to view all three golden cockerels atop Old Town churches. The square hosts various events and markets throughout the year. Street performers and musicians often add to the lively atmosphere.
