Discover more about Riga Great Choral Synagogue Holocaust Monument

The Riga Great Choral Synagogue Holocaust Monument, found on Dzirnavu iela, commemorates the tragic destruction of the Great Choral Synagogue and the loss of Jewish lives during the Holocaust. The synagogue, completed in 1871, was a cultural center in Riga, known for its architecture and talented choir. On July 4, 1941, the synagogue was burned down by Nazis, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Jews who had been locked inside. This event is considered the start of the Holocaust in Latvia. After the war, the ruins were removed by Soviet authorities, and the area was converted into a public square. In 1988, a memorial stone was placed at the site, followed by a memorial in 1993 incorporating remains of the original synagogue. The memorial features symbolic walls inlaid with fragments from the original building. Inscriptions in Latvian, Hebrew, and English honor the victims. The monument serves as a place for remembrance, reflection, and education. Plaques detail the history of the synagogue, the Jewish community in Riga, and the events of the Holocaust. A quote from the Book of Isaiah is carved on the monument. In 2007, a memorial to Jānis Lipke and others who saved Jews was unveiled nearby.
