Getting There

  • Walking

    From Talsi Town Square (Talsu pilsētas laukums), head southwest on Rīgas iela. Continue straight for about 500 meters until the crossroads with Voldemāra Ruģēna iela. Turn right onto Voldemāra Ruģēna iela. Walk for approximately 300 meters, and you will see Talsu pilskalns on your left. The entrance is marked and easily visible.

    From Talsi Town Square (Talsu pilsētas laukums), walk to the nearest bus stop. Take a local bus heading towards Talsi Pilskalns. The journey is about 10 minutes. Disembark at the stop closest to the hill fort, and walk for about 5 minutes to reach Talsu pilskalns. Bus tickets cost approximately €1-€2.

Talsu Pilskalns, also known as Klosterkalns, is an ancient hillfort located on the eastern shore of Lake Talsi in the town of Talsi, Latvia. This historical landmark dates back to the 10th century and offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the region's rich history and cultural heritage.The hillfort rises 32 meters above Lake Talsi and was once one of the largest and most fortified hillforts in ancient Courland. Archaeological research indicates that the site was inhabited from the 10th to the 14th centuries, with evidence of nine construction periods. The hillfort features a 7.5-meter-high rampart on the southern side and 1-meter-high ramparts on the northern and eastern sides.Visitors can explore the well-preserved site, which offers insight into the lives of the people who once inhabited the region. The tranquil atmosphere and panoramic vistas make it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, picnics, and quiet contemplation. Song festivals, ethnographic dancing, and St. John's Day bonfires are held here.
