Discover more about Cēsis Castle

Cēsis Castle, a cornerstone of Latvian history, invites visitors to explore its storied past. Founded by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in the early 13th century, the castle rose to prominence under the Teutonic Order, becoming a key administrative and economic center in Livonia. For a long time, Cēsis Castle served as the residence of the Masters of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and the Commanders of Cēsis, as well as the centre for managing the extensive territory. Over the centuries, Cēsis Castle witnessed numerous conflicts, including sieges by Russian, Polish, and Swedish forces. In 1577, during the Livonian War, a dramatic event occurred when approximately 300 people within the castle committed mass suicide by blowing themselves up with gunpowder rather than surrender to Ivan the Terrible's army. The castle gradually fell into disuse after the Great Northern War. Today, Cēsis Castle is the most visited heritage site in Cēsis and one of the 'must see' destinations in the Baltic states. Visitors can explore the castle's Western Tower with a candle lantern, a tradition since 1996, offering a unique perspective of the surroundings. The castle complex also includes the New Castle, home to the Cēsis History and Art Museum, and a picturesque park, reflecting the Romanticism movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The combined visitation price for Cēsis Medieval Castle and museum for adults is EUR 8.00.
