Overview
Aanjar, meaning "unresolved or running river," is an exceptional historical site nestled in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, near the Syrian border. This ancient city, also known as Hawsh Mousa, distinguishes itself as the only exclusively Umayyad site in Lebanon, dating back to the early 8th century AD. Founded by Caliph al-Walid I, Aanjar flourished briefly as a vibrant trading hub strategically positioned at the intersection of major trade routes between Beirut and Damascus, and Homs and Tiberiade. The city's design reflects a blend of Roman and Byzantine influences, featuring a rectangular layout with two main avenues, the Cardo Maximus and Decumanus Maximus, intersecting at a tetrapylon. Fortified walls, punctuated by forty towers, enclose the 114,000 square meter site, revealing impressive monuments, palaces, a mosque, and bathhouses. The Great Palace stands out with its triple arcade window, while the mosque, located north of the palace, features public and private entrances.Despite its short-lived prosperity, Aanjar provides invaluable insights into Umayyad architecture, urban planning, and commercial activities. The city was abandoned in 744 AD after a defeat suffered by Caliph Ibrahim, son of Walid, and was only rediscovered by archaeologists in the 1940s. In 1939, Armenian refugees from Musa Dagh resettled the area, adding a unique cultural dimension to the town. Today, Aanjar stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inviting visitors to explore its well-preserved ruins and immerse themselves in its rich history.
