Overview

Anjar Citadel, located in Lebanon's fertile Bekaa Valley, is a captivating journey into the heart of the Umayyad dynasty. Founded in the early 8th century by Caliph Walid I, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a remarkably well-preserved example of an Umayyad fortified city. The site was discovered by archeologists in the late 1940s.Strategically positioned at the crossroads of two important trade routes—Beirut to Damascus and Homs to Tiberias—Anjar flourished as a commercial hub. However, its prosperity was short-lived; the city was abandoned in 744 AD after the defeat of Caliph Ibrahim, son of Walid. This brief existence is what makes Anjar so unique, offering a snapshot of Umayyad town planning and architecture.Visitors can explore the city's rectangular layout, surrounded by fortified walls and forty towers. Discover the remains of grand palaces, a mosque, public baths (hammams), and colonnaded streets, showcasing a blend of Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic architectural styles. The impressive stonework, intricate mosaics, and arches provide a tangible connection to the past.Today, Anjar is not only an archeological site but also home to a vibrant Armenian community, adding another layer to its rich cultural tapestry.
