The souk has four gates that open in different directions, leading into a vast, roughly square yard. The upper rooms, some with windows covered by pierced wooden boards, may have served as hotel accommodations for merchants and allowed veiled women to view the central square discreetly. Historians have proposed various origins for the souk, including a Crusader church or a Roman temple.In the past, Souk Haraj was unfortunately marred by damage and neglect, including destruction from a 1983 bombing. However, restoration efforts between 2003 and 2005 have revived its original splendor. Today, Souk Haraj is a vibrant marketplace where you can find an array of goods, especially mats, pillows, and mattresses.
