The Beirut Nymphaeum offers a captivating glimpse into the Roman era of the city, known then as Berytus. This historical landmark, dating back to the 2nd century AD, served as a monumental public fountain and sanctuary dedicated to the Nymphs, the divine spirits of nature. The nymphaeum reflects the architectural and engineering skills of the Romans.Excavated in the early 1950s during rescue operations in downtown Beirut, the nymphaeum was originally located at the intersection of Emir Bashir and Syria streets. It was connected to the Cardo and Decumanus Maximus, the main colonnaded streets of Roman Berytus. The structure was later relocated to Rmeil in the Karantina area.The semi-circular structure is adorned with intricate stone carvings and classical motifs, showcasing Roman design. A frieze decorated with ornaments tops the nymphaeum. The staircase, likely bordered by granite columns, leads to the main structure. The discovery of a statue of Apollo nearby suggests its possible placement at the entrance.
