Le Grand Théâtre des Milles et Une Nuits: A Historical Landmark

Le Grand Théâtre des Milles et Une Nuits, also known as Beirut's Grand Theater, is a significant historical landmark located in downtown Beirut. Designed by Youssef Aftimos and constructed in the 1920s by Jacques Tabet, it first opened its doors in 1929. The theater quickly became a cultural hub, hosting a variety of international performances, including French musicals, comedies, ballets, and concerts by renowned artists.Originally part of a commercial center with a hotel, apartments, offices, and shops, the Grand Théâtre played a key role in Beirut's social and cultural life. Its horseshoe-shaped auditorium accommodated 630 seats and featured an orchestra, two balconies, and advanced stage machinery. A unique electrically-operated steel dome allowed the roof to open for ventilation, while the lobby boasted a domed ceiling with decorated stained glass.From the 1960s, the theater transitioned into a movie cinema. During the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the building suffered damage and was eventually abandoned. After the war, Solidere took control, restoring the facade and partially repairing the structure. Plans to convert the theater into a boutique hotel are underway, aiming to preserve its original charm while offering a modern destination. Today, Le Grand Théâtre stands as a testament to Beirut's rich history and artistic heritage.
