Qurnat as Sawda', meaning "The Black Corner," is more than just a mountain; it's a symbol of Lebanon's natural beauty and a testament to its rich history. As the highest point in Lebanon and the Levant, it offers unparalleled panoramic views that stretch across the Mediterranean Sea and the Bekaa Valley. On exceptionally clear days, it's even possible to see the island of Cyprus from its summit.The mountain's name has origins in the Classical Syriac language, initially called *Qornet Sohde*, or “Martyrs’ Peak”. This name is a reference to the late-13th century campaigns in the region by the Muslim Mamluk Sultanate during its conquest of the Christian Crusader states. The name evolved to Qurnat as Sawda' during the transition to Arabic in Lebanon.The peak is accessible from late April through early October due to heavy snowfall in the winter months. The mountain experiences a Mediterranean-influenced subarctic climate, with warm to cool, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The region receives significant precipitation, averaging between 1100–1400 mm annually, mostly during winter. Even during the summer, patches of snow can sometimes be found on the mountain.Hiking to the summit of Qurnat as Sawda' is a rewarding experience, with trails starting from Al Arz (The Cedars). The hike can be challenging, with steep sections and rocky paths, so hikers should bring plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate gear. The mountain is also considered a vital water reservoir, nourishing rivers such as the Assi River to the east and the Kadisha River to the west.
