    Discover more about Afqa

Afqa Waterfall is one of Lebanon's most enchanting natural wonders, cascading from a height of 200 meters from a cave in the mountains of Lebanon. The waterfall is the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim), deeply rooted in Phoenician mythology. According to legend, Afqa was the site of the tragic love story between the goddess Aphrodite (Venus) and Adonis. Adonis was fatally wounded by a wild boar, and his blood mixed with the river's waters, turning them red. The waterfall was considered sacred, symbolizing Aphrodite's tears for her lost lover. Visitors can explore the grotto behind the waterfall, discovering a hidden world of stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby, the ruins of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite stand as a testament to the area's rich history. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding countryside, offering panoramic views and a chance to explore the region's diverse flora and fauna. The best time to visit is between March and May when the waterfall is at its fullest due to snowmelt. Summer visits are also popular, providing a cool escape from the heat. Visiting Afqa is not just about witnessing the waterfall; it's about experiencing the connection between nature and mythology and uncovering the legends that shaped Lebanon's cultural heritage. The area is perfect for a day trip from Beirut, offering a refreshing break from the city.
