Discover more about Banias (Panias) Fall

Banias Fall, also known as Panias Fall, is a captivating natural attraction located within the Hermon Stream (Banias) Nature Reserve in the Golan Heights, Northern Israel. The name Banias is derived from Panyas, attributed to the Greek god Pan, who presided over rural areas. This area boasts a rich history, with evidence of ancient civilizations, including temples built by King Herod and his son Philip. The waterfall is the centerpiece of the Banias Nature Reserve, sourced by the Hermon Stream, which originates from the melting snow of Mount Hermon. The water flows through a gorge for approximately 3.5 kilometers before cascading down a 10-meter drop, making it the largest waterfall in Israel. The falls are most impressive during the winter and spring when the water flow is at its peak. The Banias Nature Reserve offers several hiking trails that cater to different fitness levels and interests. One popular option is the suspended trail, which runs along the basalt and travertine stone walls of the gorge, providing a unique perspective of the waterfall and the Hermon Stream. Other trails lead to ancient ruins, including a Crusader fortress and the Palace of Agrippa II, allowing visitors to explore the area's historical significance. Visitors can explore the remnants of a temple built by Herod in honor of Augustus, along with shrines dedicated to the Greek god Pan. The area is also significant in Christian history, as it is believed to be where Jesus gave the keys to heaven to Peter. The reserve is home to diverse flora and fauna, including the rock hyrax, a small animal resembling a guinea pig.
