Discover more about Meron Mountain Reserve

Mount Meron Reserve, sprawling across 90,596 dunams (approximately 22,387 acres), is a Galilee treasure. Declared a nature reserve in 1965, it's the largest in northern Israel, protecting a unique Mediterranean landscape. Rising to 1,208 meters (3,963 feet), Mount Meron is the highest peak in Israel within the Green Line, offering panoramic views that stretch across the Upper Galilee, into Lebanon, and towards the Golan Heights. The reserve's diverse terrain supports a rich variety of plant and animal life. Mediterranean forests of oak, terebinth, and arbutus trees cover the slopes, providing habitat for mammals, reptiles, and birds. Rare flora, representing the mountains of Turkey and Lebanon, find their southern distribution limit here. Beyond its natural allure, Mount Meron holds deep religious significance. The village of Meron, nestled on its slopes, is home to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a revered 2nd-century sage and key figure in Jewish mysticism. Each year, especially during Lag BaOmer, thousands of pilgrims gather to celebrate his life and teachings. The Summit Trail, a circular path around the mountain's peak, is a popular hiking route. It offers stunning vistas from three lookout points: the Tzfat viewpoint, the Lebanon viewpoint, and the mountain viewpoint. Other trails crisscross the reserve, catering to various skill levels.
