Discover more about Sidon Sea Castle

The Sidon Sea Castle, known locally as Qalaat al-Bahr (Sea Castle), is a prominent historical landmark in Sidon, Lebanon. Constructed by the Crusaders in 1228 AD on a small island, the castle served as a vital fortress for the Holy Land. The island's location has been of great religious, political, and commercial value since as far back as 4000 BC. Connected to the mainland by a narrow, 80-meter-long roadway, the castle's strategic design was intended for defense. The narrow causeway made it easier to defend against potential attackers. Over the centuries, the castle has been captured and modified by various rulers, including the Mamluks, who renamed it Qalaat al-Bahr, meaning Sea Castle. The Mamluks made significant improvements, utilizing the castle for both military and administrative purposes. The castle was partially destroyed by the Mamluks in the 13th century during their campaign against the Crusader states. It was later restored in the 17th century by Emir Fakhreddine II. Today, visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved architecture, including its towers, rampart walls, and a vaulted room filled with old carved capitals and cannonballs. A winding staircase leads to the roof, offering panoramic views of the old city, fishing harbor, and the Mediterranean Sea. The castle also features a small, domed Ottoman-era mosque. The surrounding area is believed to hold remnants of the ancient Phoenician city, with underwater structures of walls, columns, and buildings. The Sidon Sea Castle is not only a historical site but also a symbol of Lebanon's cultural heritage and resilience.
