Afqa Waterfall: A Lebanese Natural Wonder
Discover Afqa Waterfall: Where Lebanese mythology meets natural beauty, offering history, hiking, and serene landscapes.
Afqa Waterfall is one of Lebanon's most enchanting natural wonders, cascading from a height of 200 meters from a cave high in the mountains. The waterfall marks the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim), a river of great importance in ancient Phoenician mythology. According to legend, this is where Adonis, the deity of beauty and desire, met his tragic end. The ancient Phoenicians believed that the river would turn red with his blood each spring. Afqa was revered as a sacred site, home to a temple dedicated to Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of love and beauty, further intertwining the location with themes of mythology and history. The temple ruins are located near the waterfall. Visiting Afqa offers a blend of natural beauty and a connection to ancient civilizations. The optimal time to visit Afqa Waterfall is during spring (March to May) when the snowmelt ensures the waterfall is at its fullest. Summer is also a popular time to visit, offering a cool escape from the heat. Visitors can also explore the grotto behind the waterfall, discovering stalactites and stalagmites. Hiking trails around Afqa provide scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
