Discover more about Horsh Beirut

Horsh Beirut, often referred to as Beirut's Pine Forest (Horsh El Snoubar), is a significant urban park located in the heart of Lebanon's capital. This 75-acre green space offers a much-needed respite from the city's frenetic pace, providing a serene environment for recreation and relaxation. Originally planted in the 17th century by Emir Fakhr al-Din II, the forest has a rich history, serving as a green lung for Beirut for centuries. Over time, it faced timber exploitation by various armies, including Crusaders, Mamluks, Ottomans, and Allies during World War II. In the 20th century, portions of the forest were allocated for different purposes, such as an Ottoman Casino in 1917 and a horse racecourse in 1921. During the Israeli invasion in 1982, Horsh Beirut suffered damage from bombing and was partially transformed into a Palestinian refugee camp. After the Lebanese Civil War, the park underwent reconstruction but remained closed to the public for around 25 years, with restricted access policies. Following public demand, Horsh Beirut was reopened in September 2015 and now features walking and cycling paths, lush lawns, and pine groves. It attracts families, joggers, and nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility and fresh air. The park also hosts community events, adding to its role as a social hub. Visitors can explore historical pine groves dating back to the Ottoman era and enjoy the greenery and landscape design that contrasts with the urban surroundings.
