Discover more about Beaufort Castle

Beaufort Castle, or Qala'at al-Shaqif (Castle of the High Rock), is a historic Crusader fortress in southern Lebanon, near the village of Arnoun. Its origins trace back to the 12th century when Crusaders built it, although fortifications existed on the site before then. The castle's strategic location, high above the Litani River, commands views of southern Lebanon and northern Palestine, making it a valuable military outpost throughout its history. Over the centuries, Beaufort Castle has been controlled by various dynasties, including the Mamluks, Ottomans, and Lebanese Emirs. Saladin captured it in 1190, but the Crusaders retook it 60 years later. In 1268, Sultan Baibars finally captured the castle for Islamic forces. The castle's importance continued into modern times, serving as a strategic point during the Lebanese Civil War and later conflicts. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) held the castle from 1976, after which Israeli forces attacked it numerous times before occupying it in 1982. Israel withdrew from Beaufort in 2000. Visitors to Beaufort Castle can explore the ruins of its walls, towers, and underground tunnels. The site provides insight into medieval military architecture and Lebanon's cultural heritage. The castle's elevated position offers stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding countryside.
