Explore the ancient Fortress of Niha, a cliffside citadel with centuries of Lebanese history and stunning views of the Chouf region.

4.6

The Fortress of Niha, perched high in the Chouf mountains, is a testament to Lebanon's strategic and historical significance. Carved directly into a cliff overlooking the Bisri and Aray valleys, the fortress, also called the Cave of Tyron and Chquif Tayroun, has guarded the road between Sidon and the Beqaa Valley for centuries. First mentioned in historical records in 975 AD, the fortress has been controlled by Crusaders, local Muslims, and Mamluks. It was destroyed in 1261 and rebuilt in 1270. The fortress is reputed to have sheltered Emir Qorqomaz Maan in 1585 and possibly his son Emir Fakhr-al-Din II in 1635 before their respective deaths. The cave-like structure extends over a hundred meters deep, featuring chambers and rooms carved into the rock to house soldiers and store provisions. The fortress also utilized a rainwater collection system and a spring called 'Ain el-Halquoum as water sources. Today, the Fortress of Niha is a cultural heritage site within the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, inviting visitors to explore its ancient walls and imagine its storied past.
