Discover more about Sidon Sea Castle

Perched on a small island just off the coast of Sidon, Lebanon, the Sea Castle is a striking reminder of the Crusader presence in the region. Built in 1228 by the Crusaders as a fortress of the Holy Land, the castle is connected to the mainland by a narrow 80-meter causeway. The island itself was once the site of a temple to Melqart, the Phoenician version of Heracles, adding layers of history to this strategic location. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous conflicts and changes in power. In 1260, the Mamluks captured and partially destroyed it, later making significant modifications and renaming it Qalaat al-Bahr, meaning Sea Castle. The castle was later restored in the 17th century by Emir Fakhreddine II, only to suffer further damage. Today, visitors can explore the castle's ruins, including the two towers connected by a wall, a vaulted room with old carved capitals and cannonballs, and a small, domed Ottoman-era mosque on the roof. The castle offers stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Sidon. Exploring the castle's depths reveals remnants of its past, including ancient artifacts and intricate carvings. Despite facing neglect and cleanliness issues, the Sidon Sea Castle remains an iconic symbol of Sidon's history and a popular tourist attraction.
