Beaufort Castle, or Qala'at al-Shaqif (Castle of the High Rock), is a historic Crusader fortress located in southern Lebanon, approximately 1 kilometer south-southeast of Arnoun. Its strategic position on a high hilltop, about 700 meters above sea level, provides commanding views of the Litani River valley, southern Lebanon, and northern Palestine. The castle's history dates back to before the Crusader era, with some historians suggesting possible Roman or Byzantine origins. It was captured by Fulk, the King of Jerusalem, in 1139, and construction of the Crusader castle likely began soon after. Over the centuries, Beaufort Castle has been controlled by various forces, including Saladin's army in 1190, the Crusaders again in 1240, and the Mamluks in 1268. In the 17th century, Emir Fakhreddine II took over the castle and added it to his network of fortifications. Beaufort Castle has been the site of numerous battles and conflicts throughout its history. It was held by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) during the Lebanese Civil War and was later captured by Israeli forces in 1982 during the Battle of Beaufort. The castle remained under Israeli control until their withdrawal from Southern Lebanon in 2000. Today, Beaufort Castle stands as a famous landmark in Lebanon, attracting visitors with its rich history and stunning views. Visitors can explore the castle's ruins, including its walls, towers, and underground tunnels, while learning about its historical significance through informational plaques and guided tours.
