This ancient Phoenician metropolis boasts a history stretching back over 4,700 years, with continuous habitation since around 2750 BC. Tyre rose to prominence as a leading city-state between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, establishing colonies across the Mediterranean. Tyre's significance stems from its role as a major maritime center and the legendary birthplace of Europa and Carthage's founder, Dido. The city was famed for its production of purple dye, a symbol of royalty in the ancient world. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved archaeological remains from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval periods. Key attractions include the Roman Hippodrome, one of the largest of its kind, and the Al-Mina archaeological site, an ancient port dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. The site is divided into two sections: the eastern section, which requires an entry fee and features a well-preserved theater, and the western section, which is free and offers glimpses of Roman baths and colonnaded streets. Visiting Tyre offers a unique blend of historical exploration and relaxation, with inviting beaches and a vibrant modern city built amongst the ruins. The city's rich cultural heritage, combined with its coastal setting, makes it a compelling destination for travelers interested in history and archaeology.
