Discover more about Afqa

Afqa Waterfall, nestled in the mountains of Lebanon, is one of the Middle East's most stunning natural wonders. The waterfall plummets from a height of 200 meters out of a limestone cave, the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim). This dramatic scene unfolds within a natural amphitheater, surrounded by lush greenery and rugged cliffs. Known in ancient times as Aphaca, meaning "source," Afqa was a sacred site associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, and Adonis, her mortal lover. Legend says that Adonis died at the foot of the falls, his blood turning the river red. The ruins of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite stand nearby, adding a historical layer to the site's natural beauty. Each spring, melting snows bring reddish mud into the river, an event once believed to be the renewed blood of Adonis. Visitors can explore the grotto behind the waterfall, venture on hiking trails, and visit the ruins of the Adonis Temple. The best time to visit is during spring (March-May) when the waterfall is at its fullest. Though summer offers a cooler retreat, the water flow may be reduced.
