Discover more about Tsehlanyane national park

Tsehlanyane National Park, located in the northern part of Lesotho, is a captivating destination for those seeking rugged mountain scenery and unique biodiversity. As one of only two national parks in Lesotho, it holds significant ecological importance, protecting some of the country's only indigenous woodlands. The park's name, derived from the Sesotho word for berg bamboo ('Ts'ehlanyane'), reflects the prevalence of this culturally significant plant along the rivers and streams. The park's dramatic landscape ranges in altitude from 1,940 to 3,112 meters, creating a sub-alpine environment characterized by rugged terrain, cliffs, caves, rivers, and waterfalls. The higher slopes support rare heath-like mountain fynbos, adorned with colorful aloes and irises that bloom vibrantly in the spring. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diverse avian life, including the Drakensberg siskin, Cape batis, and the possibility of spotting the endangered bearded vulture. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails ranging from short day hikes to multi-day treks. The park owes its existence, in part, to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, specifically the access road to the Hlotse Tunnel. This road now provides access to this protected area, allowing visitors to explore its natural wonders. While wildlife sightings may be less common, the park is home to over 20 mammal species, including the majestic eland and the endearing rock hyrax.
