Meaning 'Mountain at Night,' Thaba Bosigo earned its name from the local belief that it grew taller and more imposing under the cover of darkness, a legend propagated by King Moshoeshoe I to dissuade potential invaders. The mountain's natural defenses, including steep cliffs and limited accessible passes, further contributed to its reputation as an impregnable fortress.
King Moshoeshoe I and his followers occupied Thaba Bosigo in 1824, seeking refuge from the ravages of the Difaqane/Mfecane Wars. The plateau provided a safe haven for the Basotho, allowing them to consolidate their power and resist external threats from other African groups, British forces, and Boer settlers. The mountain's fertile land and numerous springs ensured a sustainable food and water supply for its inhabitants during prolonged sieges.
