The mountain's natural defenses, including steep cliffs and limited accessible passes, further contributed to its reputation as an impregnable fortress.King Moshoeshoe I and his followers occupied Thaba Bosigo in 1824, seeking refuge from the ravages of the Difaqane/Mfecane Wars. The plateau provided a safe haven for the Basotho, allowing them to consolidate their power and resist external threats from other African groups, British forces, and Boer settlers. The mountain's fertile land and numerous springs ensured a sustainable food and water supply for its inhabitants during prolonged sieges.Today, Thaba Bosigo is a national monument and a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the globe. Visitors can explore the remains of King Moshoeshoe I's village, including the graves of the king and his family members.
