Discover more about Atiq Mosque, Awjila

The Atiq Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque or al-Kabir mosque, is located in the oasis village of Awjila, in the Sahara Desert within the Cyrenaica region of eastern Libya. The mosque is a historical and cultural landmark, reflecting the enduring influence of Islam in the region since the Arab conquest in the 7th century. Built in the 12th century, the Atiq Mosque is considered the oldest in the area. Its most striking features are the 21 conical domes, crafted from a mixture of mud brick and limestone. These domes not only provide structural support but also serve as a natural source of light and ventilation through small openings in each dome. The mosque covers an area of 400 square meters and has walls that are 40 centimeters thick. Nine doors open into the interior, revealing a spacious environment filled with pillars and arches that create a calm and cool atmosphere. Inside, the mosque includes a mihrab and a recessed niche for the minbar, where the prayer leader stands. Similar minbar niches in mosques in Arabia and East Africa suggest the builders may have followed the Ibadi school of Islam. The mosque has undergone restoration, including work in the 1980s and refurbishment in preparation for visitors during the solar eclipse of 2006. The Atiq Mosque stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Awjila's cultural identity and architectural heritage.
