Discover more about Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar isn't just a mountain; it's a high-altitude oasis in the Omani desert. Part of the Al Hajar range, this area encompasses the Saiq Plateau, reaching 2,000m above sea level. Its name, meaning "Green Mountain," comes from the relatively abundant vegetation that thrives on its slopes, thanks to a unique combination of altitude and precipitation. For centuries, Jebel Akhdar has been inhabited by local tribes, most notably the Bani Riyam. They have ingeniously cultivated the land, carving terraces into the mountainsides and using the ancient Falaj irrigation system to grow a variety of crops. Pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and peaches flourish here, alongside the Damask roses that bloom in spring and are used to make the region's famous rosewater. Visitors can explore traditional villages like Al Ayn, Wadi Bani Habib, and Saiq, each offering a glimpse into Omani culture and history. Hiking trails wind through the mountains, leading to stunning viewpoints, abandoned villages, and hidden wadis. Diana's Point, named after Princess Diana, offers particularly breathtaking panoramic views. Jebel Akhdar's history also includes a period of conflict. Between 1954 and 1959, it was the site of the Jebel Akhdar War, a conflict between Omani forces and rebel forces. Today, the area is a designated nature reserve, protecting its unique biodiversity and natural scenery.
