Discover more about Küefer-Martis-Huus

The Küefer-Martis-Huus, located in Ruggell, is more than just a museum; it's a journey back in time. Constructed in 1731 as a Baroque farmhouse, it vividly illustrates the rural life of the Rhine Valley. The house derives its name from Martin Biedermann, who bought it in 1862 and was known as 'Küefer Marti'. This nickname originated from his grandfather, Josef Biedermann, who worked as a cooper (Küefer). The building served as a farmhouse with an attached barn for generations. The municipality of Ruggell acquired the house in 1997 and placed it under historical preservation in March 1999. Since 2002, it has functioned as a museum and cultural center. The barn was replaced with a modern structure called 'Kulturtenn,' made of wood and exposed concrete. The ground floor, consisting of a kitchen, living room with a tiled stove, and bedroom, has been faithfully restored and furnished with antique furniture. Today, the Küefer-Martis-Huus serves as a cultural and community center for Ruggell. The museum section largely focuses on the theme of water, given the house's proximity to the Rhine. The 'Kulturtenn' hosts various cultural events, including meetings, lectures, courses, and exhibitions. The Küefer-Martis-Huus also publishes books on local topics, some of which have been recognized as the most beautiful books in Liechtenstein. The museum is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 PM to 5 PM, or by appointment.
