Discover more about Davos

Davos, situated in the heart of the Graubünden region of the Swiss Alps, boasts a captivating history and a reputation as a world-class destination. First mentioned in 1213, Davos evolved from a Romansh-speaking settlement to a German-speaking Walser community in the 13th century, gaining autonomy and establishing itself as a key player in the League of Ten Jurisdictions. In the mid-19th century, Davos transformed into a climate health resort, attracting visitors seeking treatment for tuberculosis due to its high altitude and sunny climate. This era saw the construction of sanatoriums and the arrival of notable figures like Thomas Mann, whose novel 'The Magic Mountain' was inspired by his time in Davos. The opening of a railway connection in 1890 further boosted the town's popularity. Davos is internationally recognized as the largest resort in the Alps, offering a wide array of winter sports activities. Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts can enjoy 320 km of slopes, while cross-country skiers have access to 75 km of trails. The town also features two artificial ice-skating rinks and Europe's largest natural ice rink. In the summer, Davos provides opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and water sports on Lake Davos. Since 1971, Davos has been the host of the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual gathering of global political and corporate leaders. This event has solidified Davos's position as a prominent international hub and a symbol of globalization. Beyond the WEF, Davos offers a vibrant cultural scene, with museums like the Kirchner Museum, and a lively nightlife.
