Discover more about Broderbrunnen

The Broderbrunnen, also known as the Brother Fountain, graces the western side of Marktplatz in St. Gallen's historic Old Town. Created by Swiss sculptor August Bösch, the fountain was inaugurated in 1895/96. It commemorates the introduction of Lake Constance water to St. Gallen households. The fountain is named after Hans Broder, a cantonal judge (1845–1891), who bequeathed the city the funds necessary for its construction. The fountain features a triangular column adorned with sculptures. At the top, a nymph, barely clothed, stands as a symbol of the blessings that water brings. According to local lore, Bösch brought in a nude model from Zurich for the sculpture, causing a scandal that required police intervention. Below the nymph are figures of children riding aquatic animals. Look for the statues of Fortuna and Libertas on the roof of the UBS building across the square. More than just a water source, the Broderbrunnen embodies St. Gallen's artistic traditions and civic pride. It serves as a gathering point and a symbol of the city's identity.
