Discover more about Hängebrücke über die Argen

The Hängebrücke über die Argen, also known as the Argen Bridge Langenargen, is a captivating testament to late 19th-century engineering. Spanning the Argen River between Kressbronn and Langenargen, this suspension bridge was constructed between 1896 and 1897 under the reign of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg. The bridge's design, inspired by the iron Danube bridge in Budapest, was led by Karl von Leibbrand and executed by the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. It officially opened on January 25, 1898. Before the bridge, crossing the Argen River required a two-hour detour. In 1838, a wooden bridge was built, which was later replaced by the current suspension bridge. The Hängebrücke is a true suspension bridge, with its weight supported by cables anchored firmly into the ground. The bridge is 72 meters long and 6.2 meters wide. The bridge's cables are anchored approximately 20 meters outside the bridge in accessible anchor chambers. During World War II, the bridge suffered minor damage from a nearby air raid in 1944, with cable damage repaired with visible sleeves. In 1945, the German army planned to destroy the bridge, but local residents prevented it. Today, the Hängebrücke is a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into the past and scenic views of the Argen River.
