Discover more about Mangturm

The Mangturm, located in Lindau on Lake Constance, is a captivating vestige of the city's medieval past. Constructed in the 12th century, this sturdy stone tower originally served as a crucial component of Lindau's defenses, acting as a watchtower to guard the harbor. Standing approximately 20 meters (65 feet) tall, it provided an ideal vantage point for spotting potential threats. Later, the Mangturm transitioned into a lighthouse, guiding ships safely into the harbor for five centuries until 1856 when a new lighthouse was built. The tower's name is derived from its proximity to the Tuch- und Mangenhaus, warehouses of the clothiers' guild. Today, its distinctive glazed tile roof and the yellow upper story make it a recognizable landmark. Visitors can climb the 89 steps to the top of the Mangturm for stunning views of Lindau's old town, Lake Constance, and the surrounding Alps. The tower also hosts fairy tale hours and occasional art exhibitions, adding to its cultural appeal. Adding to the tower's allure, a long, golden braid is sometimes hung from one of its windows, referencing the fairy tale of Rapunzel.
