Discover more about Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, a stout, round tower, stands as a silent witness to Lindau's storied past. Erected in 1508 as part of the town's fortifications, it initially served as a crucial defensive structure. Its strategic location at the westernmost point of the island made it an ideal vantage point. In 1629, its tent roof was lowered to minimize the surface area exposed to enemy fire, a decision that proved prescient as the tower survived the Thirty Years' War unscathed. Towards the end of the 18th century, the tower was converted into a powder magazine, where the Lindau militia stored their supplies. However, by 1898, its defensive role was long gone, and the tower was transformed into a place of "cheerful conviviality". Dr. Heinrich Schützinger, Lindau's mayor from 1894 to 1919, took up residence and hosted notable guests, including the Grand Duke of Baden and Count Zeppelin. Today, the Pulverturm is owned by the Lindau public utility company and is available for rent for conferences and celebrations. Though visitors cannot enter the tower, they can admire its architecture and idyllic setting from the outside. The adjacent park provides a tranquil space to relax and enjoy the views of Lake Constance.
