Discover more about Reformierte Martinskirche

The Reformierte Martinskirche, prominently situated in Chur's Old Town, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Originally built as a Romanesque church in the 8th century, it was consecrated in 769 and named after Saint Martin of Tours. The church was largely destroyed in the Chur fire of 1464, and its reconstruction in the late Gothic style was completed in 1491. Since 1523, the Martinskirche has been the main church of the Reformation in Chur, led by Johannes Comander. The church's architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, featuring robust stone walls and round-arched windows alongside pointed arch windows. The bell tower, standing at approximately 22 meters, adds to the structure's majesty. Inside, visitors can admire stunning frescoes, stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti from 1919, and a carved wooden choir. The church also features a magnificent organ installed in 1978. The Reformierte Martinskirche is the largest late-Gothic building in Graubünden and the largest Evangelical Reformed church building in the canton. Its spire is a landmark of the Old Town.
