Discover more about St. Martinsplatz

St. Martinsplatz, nestled in the heart of Chur's Altstadt (old town), is a captivating square that embodies the historical and cultural essence of this ancient Alpine city. Situated between the Untertor and Obertor towers, it marks a key point along the historical north-south transit route through the inner city. This square has served as a hub for trade and community since the early Middle Ages. The square is named after the prominent St. Martin's Church (Kirche St. Martin), a reformed main church that stands as a focal point. Originally built as a Romanesque church in the 8th century, it was largely destroyed by fire in 1464 and rebuilt in the late Gothic style, completed in 1491. The church's three glass windows, created by artist Augusto Giacometti in 1919, depict the Christmas story. In front of the church stands the Martinsbrunnen, a fountain dating back to 1716. Adorned with signs of the zodiac, the fountain features a sculpture of Martin of Tours dressed in soldier's clothing. St. Martinsplatz is surrounded by well-preserved architecture, with quaint cafes and shops adding to its inviting atmosphere. The square provides a serene ambiance, inviting visitors to stroll, relax, and soak in the views of the surrounding mountains. Throughout the year, St. Martinsplatz hosts various events, markets, and local gatherings, offering tourists an immersive experience into the local culture.
