Theater Chur: A Cultural Hub in Graubünden
Experience world-class performances at Theater Chur, the cultural heart of Graubünden, Switzerland. A stage for drama, music, and dance.
Theater Chur, formerly known as Stadttheater Chur, stands as the largest theater in the Canton of Graubünden. Established in 1876, the theater has a long history of continuous seasonal operation, with regular guest performances in other cities. The theater building itself has an interesting history. From 1861 to 1863, architect Johannes Ludwig, who also designed the Bündner Kunstmuseum, built an armory on the site. The armory's rounded arches were typical of the architectural style that preceded the Neo-Renaissance period, drawing inspiration from the Italian Medieval era. In 1959, architect Martin Risch converted the former armory to accommodate both the Cantonal Parliament and the municipal theater. The theater is located in close proximity to the Grossratsgebäude (Cantonal Parliament Building). Today, Theater Chur is known for fostering new and interesting experiments and cultural dialogues. Its season, which runs from September to June, features both international productions by established directors and choreographers, as well as national and regional co-productions by a wide variety of contemporary artists. The theater also hosts concert series, amateur dramatics, dance productions, and other events. The theater bar is open one hour before performances.
