Discover more about Tonhalle St. Gallen

The Tonhalle St. Gallen is a prominent concert hall in St. Gallen, Switzerland, renowned for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture and its role as a cultural center. Built between 1906 and 1909, the Tonhalle has been a venue for concerts, banquets, and meetings, and is the home of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra. The Tonhalle stands at the intersection of the old city and the museum district. The hall's design, by architect Julius Kunkler, combines elements of Art Nouveau and Neobarock styles. A key feature of the building is its innovative reinforced concrete frame, designed by Robert Maillart, which was revolutionary for concert halls at the time. The exterior is clad in plastered brick. Throughout its history, the Tonhalle has hosted famous guest orchestras and conductors, including Artur Nikisch, Richard Strauss, Felix Weingartner and Arturo Toscanini. Othmar Schoeck served as the conductor of symphony concerts from 1917 to 1944. The hall has also served various purposes, including as a temporary hospital during World War I. A significant renovation in the early 1990s enlarged the stage and improved facilities, and the hall reopened in May 1993. In 2010, the hall's acoustics were enhanced with a redesigned stage and the addition of a gold-leafed "sound cloud" in the dome area. The Tonhalle remains a focal point for classical concerts, cabaret, jazz, and other events, contributing significantly to the cultural identity of St. Gallen.
