    Discover more about Waaghaus

The Waaghaus, located on Bohl 14 in St. Gallen, is a significant historical building dating back to 1584-1585. Constructed as a Kauf-, Gred- und Waaghaus (trade, grain, and weighing house) by city architect Wolfgang Fögeli, it initially served as a center for St. Gallen merchants to weigh, tax, and store their goods. The name 'Waaghaus' is derived from the German word 'Waag,' meaning scale. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus has adapted to the changing needs of the city. In 1876, a post office was opened in the Waaghaus, which remained there until the renovation of 1958. Today, the open lower level hosts various events like Christmas markets, while the upper level contains a hall for exhibitions and concerts, and the council chamber for St. Gallen's city parliament. The building's architecture includes large entrance gates, step gables on the east and west facades and a roof turret with a moon phase clock salvaged from the old town hall. The Waaghaus stands at the eastern end of the Marktplatz, narrowing the exit to Brühltor and Rorschacherstrasse. The building is a testament to St. Gallen's commitment to preserving its historical architecture and serves as a vibrant hub where history and modernity converge.
