Discover more about Burg Gutenberg

Burg Gutenberg, located in the southernmost municipality of Balzers, Liechtenstein, is a remarkably well-preserved castle with a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the castle hill has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with artifacts like the Mars von Gutenberg figurine, now displayed in the Liechtenstein National Museum. The castle itself began as a medieval church and cemetery in the early 12th century. Fortification of the church structure commenced with the addition of a ring wall, forming a simple keep. Over the centuries, the castle has been owned by various nobles, including the Lords of Frauenberg and the House of Habsburg. It served as a strategic border post and underwent extensive reconstruction in the 15th century under Emperor Maximilian I. Today, Burg Gutenberg is open to the public as a museum, offering visitors a chance to explore its historical grounds and enjoy panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and the Swiss Alps. The bailey is open year-round, and the chapel and rose garden are accessible on Sundays during the summer tourist season. The castle also hosts cultural events, including concerts and medieval fairs, providing an immersive experience of Liechtenstein's vibrant community life.
